I’m on day 16 of Deepak and Oprah’s 21 Day meditation challenge – Perfect Health… I enjoy the talk and meditation immensely, but my eating and exercise habits have not changed much… I finally realized today that perhaps I have a big issue… Especially when it comes to sweets… I see sweets and I eat sweets… I do not discriminate… I love them all… I may go without one day, but on the second or third day, I just give-up and eat it… And I’m not talking about just one small piece, but half a pint of ice cream or four huge peanut butter cups… I do so well and eat so healthy and then I screw it all up with the dessert… Nothing seems to quench the sweet cravings… I’ve tried yogurt, fruit, fruit bars, granola, anything low-fat and I revert after a few days back to my old ways…
On my drive home tonight after I ate a pack of peeps which I bought for decoration purposes, I thought about the guilt this is creating and what I can do to change this pattern and so, I decided to try to chanting. Whenever I get the urge to eat sweets, I will chant the Mantra that comes to mind and try to take my thoughts of the cravings… I don’t know why I didn’t think about this before… This may work… I hope so… I do not want to end up with Diabetes… Please wish me luck…
I learned various Mantras during the meditation challenge… Deepak suggest to repeat the Mantra quietly while meditating. I imagine this is to try keep the mind from running amok.
For those interested in adding a Mantra to your meditation, here is the list so far:
- Om Bhavam Nahma – I am absolute existence. I am a field of all possibilities…
- Yum, Yum, Yum – Enlivens your heart chakra…
- Sham, sham, sham – Awakens you third eye chakra, your intuition…
- Om, Om, Om – Honors connection to universe…
- Om Anandham Namah – My actions are blissfully free from attachment to outcome…
- So Hum – I am…
- Lam, Lam, Lam – Root chakra – Allowing us to feel grounded…
- Om Kriyam Namah – My actions are aligned with cosmic law…
- Sat Chit Ananda – Existence, Consciousness, bliss…
- So Hum – I am…
- Om Vardhanam Namah – I nourish the universe and the universe nourishes me..
- Tat Tvam Asi – I see the other in myself and myself in others…
- Om Varunam Namah – My life is in harmony with cosmic law…
- Om Ritam Nahma – My actions and desires are supported by the cosmic intelligence..
- Ram, Ram, Ram – Everything I desire is within me…
Namaste…. Enjoy the experience this may bring…

Sugar is a powerful addictive substance. I found that once I eliminated sugar for about 5 days or so, my body didn’t crave it anymore. BTW, grains also raise the blood glucose level, sometimes even more so than a candy bar. So both sugar and grains are substances that keep us addicted.

I’m trying to add more healthy proteins to my diet and whole grains, but three O’clock rolls around and my sweet tooth kicks in…

Hi Lumar – that’s very common especially after eating a sandwich at lunch. Have you tried eating some protein instead (a handful of nuts, a few pieces of cheese)? That can quickly satisfy your appetite and counteract cravings. Something else I learned at the Ann Wigmore Raw Foods Institute in Puerto Rico last winter: when you eat something sour and fermented like sauerkraut or pickles, that can also defeat the sugar cravings. I know it doesn’t sound like it….
